OVERCOMING MY PAST: THAT SINGLE MOM ON WELFARE

When food ran low before our next voucher, I sat with my older girls (then about 7 and 6 yrs old) and apologized to them for our struggles, I held them and cried and made them promise not to make my mistakes - I told them they would only go hungry with me a few times but if they concentrate on their education then when they become women like mommy they will never be hungry again and they had the opportunity to learn from my mistakes and never have to make them. I gave God thanks that my life was the sacrifice for them to see what happens if you dont take your future seriously and commit to walking right...

All in all I appreciate that differences are to be expected and all eyes are on mommy to see how she handles these situations and I am keen on admitting that my behavior will surely be mimicked by my girls so before I act on anything these days I stop, breath and try to remember to ask myself "would I want my kids to say/do this?".

When my beautiful babies are grown and moving out to find their own lives and families I pray to be in a little rocking chair on the front porch looking at the quiet yard and remembering those care-free giggles and crazy screams that I never thought would transform so quickly in to the adult voices that call from university or wherever the future and my great God leads my little ones.
